The spirit world is always giving us signs. We often overlook them and miss the messages.
Here are 11 common signs that the spirit world is trying to reach you. Knowing what to look for will help you identify these signs and connect with those on the other side.

1 – Dreams about a Loved One in the Spirit World
One of the most common signs from the other side is dreams. When we are dreaming, our conscious mind is dormant, and our subconscious mind is more active. The messages have an easier time reaching us.
Not all dreams about dead people are visits from the spirit world. Often when you have a dream about somebody that crossed over, it’s your subconscious mind’s way of processing that loss. It’s part of the grieving process. Maybe you’re working through some unresolved guilt or anger.
These dreams are an important part of the healing process, but they are not visiting. True visit dreams tend to happen in the lighter state of sleep when your conscious mind isn’t completely shut down. This is known as the Theta State.
Visits from the other side are usually crystal clear. The person coming through in the dream often appears younger and healthier. They may be so lucid that you ask them, “What are you doing here? I thought you were dead.” If you’re half asleep, you might see the apparition of that person in your bedroom.
There are a couple of things you can do to increase the odds that you will get a full-on visit from your loved ones during your dreams. Before you lay down to bed pray to them, talk to them, and ask them to come through during the night. Every morning when you wake up get in the habit of writing in your journals. Write any dreams you had in a notebook.
If you do these two things over time, you’re going to open the pathways and invite the spirits to come through. They will give you powerful messages while you sleep. Get in the habit of doing these two things and you’ll get a powerful dream from somebody on the other side.
2 – Physical Phenomena
Another sign that people often get is physical phenomena. This can include things like electronic glitches, lights blinking, banging, or movement.
These types of visits are possible because the two worlds are very connected to each other. Some spirits figure out how to use physical phenomena to get your attention. So, if a lampshade moves, it may be one of your loved ones trying to give you a message, but please make sure your window is closed first.
I tend to get a lot of physical phenomena like phantom texts. Has that ever happened to you?
A few summers ago, I was at Lily Dale. This funny female spirit was following me around. Messages would type themselves on my text field saying, “I hope you’re having a good day honey”. It’s never a dull moment with Spirit.
When was the last time that you lost something only to find it in a place that you know you already looked in?
Some spirits are so strong they can make objects disappear. Quantum physics not only proves that this is possible but it’s plausible so be aware of these signs. If you feel that you’re getting a physical sign that there’s a spirit around you, stop for a moment and say, “Hello”.
What if you’re not getting any of these signs? Does it mean that your spirit loved ones are not with you or that they don’t want to talk to you? Not at all. Most signs from the spirit world are more subtle. They don’t affect the physical world quite that profoundly and there’s plenty of other signs to choose from.
3 – Psychic Smells
Psychic smells are another sign from the spirit world. It’s a more subtle sign but it’s still a powerful one.
Spirits carry the energy of their physical life with them to the spirit world. Sometimes as humans, we can access them as psychic smells. For example, if you smell your father’s cigar smoke, but no one is around you is a cigar smoker, take a moment and say, “Hi Dad”.
Often spirit smells, also called clairolfactory, are fleeting. They’re usually gone as soon as you think about it.
Many mediums use psychic smelling in their evidential work. If I’m doing a reading and a heavy drinker comes through, I’ll smell alcohol around them. I’d rather smell grandma’s cheap perfume than that any day of the week.
4 – Signs in Nature
Other common signs from the spirit world are found in nature. Seeing a cardinal is often a powerful indicator that a spirit loved one is trying to get your attention. Hearing an owl or seeing dragonflies is another sign.
If you happen to be thinking about somebody that crossed over as you get a sign, then it becomes synchronicity. This is an immensely powerful indicator that a loved one is around you.
When I see a cardinal, hummingbird, or eagle as I connect with a spirit, I take it as a confirmation. It is a sign that Spirit is coming through, and I continue to give my clients their messages.
Another example of synchronicity is seeing someone pass by that looks like your mom right as you mention her name. Maybe a car passes by with her birth date on the license plate, or her favorite song comes on the radio.
Synchronicities are powerful indicators that a spirit loved one is trying to get your attention. Something as simple as a well-timed gust of wind could be synchronicity. Pay attention and make sure to say, “Hi”.
5 – Thinking about a Loved One Who Crossed Over
When was the last time that somebody on the other side randomly popped into your head? It most likely was not random. That person was probably with you and trying to get your attention.
6 – Seeing a Clear Image of Someone in the Spirit World
A related sign is clearly seeing someone that has passed on. It usually occurs out of the blue. When that happens, there’s a good chance that someone in the spirit world is close by.
7 – Seeing Spirit
Another sign from the spirit world is seeing movement out of the corner of your eyes. Some people even see a ghost or an apparition. This is another sign that your loved ones are with you.
8 – Hearing Spirit
Hearing spirit is another sign someone on the other side may be near. You may hear them calling you name, but when you look around nobody’s there.
9 – Spirit Touch
Some signs can be more tactile, like getting goosebumps or feeling a tap on your shoulder. People get a brushing sensation across their hair, face, or other parts of the body. Often when that happens, there is a spirit presence around you trying to get your attention.
When a Spirit Wants Your Attention
When a spirit wants your attention, they come up with creative ways to get it. The Christmas Eve after my brother passed, I got an uncontrollable urge to get out of my chair and turn off the Christmas carols and turn on show music. There was a Christmas Eve that he decided he was sick of Christmas carols and we wound up listening to show music. I know my brother’s laughing on the other side about this one.
10 – Gesturing or Speaking Like Someone in the Spirit World
One subtle sign is subconsciously using similar gestures or phraseology as somebody who has crossed over. Acting like someone from the other side is a sign your loved one is close to you and trying to reach you.
11 – Wanting to See a Medium
The final sign is simply developing a desire to see a medium. You might also develop an interest in things like the paranormal or life after death. This is a sign that someone on the other sign is calling you.
